Portugal Passes Laws On Same-Sex Adoption

Today, Portugal has passed a law that will allow same-sex married couples to adopt their partner’s child, whether that child is adopted or biological, but they have stopped short of allowing a same-sex couple to adopt as a married couple like a heterosexual couple.

The proposal was put forward by the centre-left Socialist Party and passed by five votes, but the proposal put forward by the Left Bloc and the Green Party, to allow them to adopt as a married couple was defeated 77 to 104.

Paulo Corte-Real of ILGA, the international LGBT association, says the law is extremely important as it concerns the rights of children and not just couples, and would give the child protection if the original parent became ill, or died.

Portugal has civil ceremony same-sex marriage since 2010.
