As part of this year’s Limerick Pride festival, a discussion on LGBT equality in Ireland today will take place next Wednesday evening at the Absolute Hotel in Limerick City.
The event, titled Equality, It’s Time – A Political Response, will see a panel of representatives from the main political parties in Ireland, including Minister Jan O’Sullivan TD of the Labour Party, and Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice, Equality & Law Reform, Niall Collins TD. The debate will be chaired by Adam Long, from the National Lesbian and Gay Federation.
Speaking about the event, Adam Long said:
“…there are still many equality battles to be won at home. In addition to marriage equality, the Trans community battles for basic rights and dignity, long after most of the rest of Europe has advanced on this issue. Homophobic bullying remains a major problem in our schools, not helped by the Section 37 opt-out from our otherwise robust equality legislation, which allows religious run institutions to discriminate against LGBT staff.”
