In a surprise message to the opening of the Gay Games by video yesterday, starting with “Hello everybody, welcome to the 2014 Gay Games”, President
Obama told the athletes, families and supporters at Gay Games 9, held in Cleveland this year, that he was proud of his administration’s record on equal rights for the LGBT community.
“It’s been remarkable to see the games thrive over the years. We’ve also seen America change over that time” said Obama on the video. He also told participants from other countries who have anti-gay laws in place that “The United States stands with you, and for your human rights”.
