Dublin Priest Comes Out as Gay

St._Nicholas_of_Myra_(Without)A Dublin-based Catholic priest received a standing ovation during mass last week, when he came out as gay to the congregation.

Fr. Martin Dolan, who is a priest at the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra on Francis Street in the city, surprised his congregation when he told them he was gay. He made the announcement while advocating for those who were in attendance to support the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum, due to take place in May this year. His declaration was reportedly met with a warm round of applause from the congregation as they rose to their feet.

Speaking to the Irish Sun newspaper, community youth worker Liz O’Connor said:

“We are all very proud of Father Martin. Because he has admitted that he is gay he doesn’t change the person that he was before it.”

Fr. Dolan has been a priest at the Francis Street church for over 15 years. He is currently the only priest at the church.
