Former US Senator Harris Wofford, a widower 90 years of age, has just announced in an op-ed in the New York Times, that he is to marry his partner of 15 years, 40 year-old Matthew Charlton at the end of this month.
Senator Harris was formerly married to Clare, his ,wife of 50 years, who died 20 years ago, after a battle with acute leukemia.
The senator says in the New York Times editorial that he did not expect to find love again in his lifetime, but met Charlton while swimming at a beach in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was struck by his “thougthful manner and his charm”. He wrote:
“I am lucky to be in an era where the Supreme Court has strengthened what President Obama calls “the dignity of marriage” by recognizing that matrimony is not based on anyone’s sexual nature, choices or dreams. It is based on love”.
