Singer-songwriter Barry Manilow has finally come out to the public, at age 73, and three years after marrying his partner of over 40 years, Garry Keif.
The couple got married at their 53-acre estate in Palm Springs in 2014.
In what was an open secret to many, Manilow gave his reason for keeping quiet as that he thought it might upset fans to find out that he was gay. However, it seems the opposite was true, with many fans congratulating him when they found out.
Manilow’s husband, Garry Keif, who hails from Houston, is also his manager. The two met in 1978, while Keif was an ABC television executive. For Barry Manilow, it was love at first sight. He told People magazine:
“I knew that this was it. I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that”.
However, earlier in their relationship, when both were in a car after a concert, fans started to rock the car, and Keif became alarmed, saying:
“I can’t handle this. It’s not for me”. Barry says that he was glad Garry stayed.
As well as being his manager, Keif is also president of Barry Manilow Productions.
Barry Manilow was previously married to childhood sweetheart, Susan Deixler, whom he married after graduation. He says he was in love with Susan, however, that marriage only lasted a year.
Manilow first shot to fame with the classic, Mandy, and is also known for hits like Copacabana, and Can’t Smile Without You. He is releasing a new album on April 21 called This Is My Town: Songs of New York.
