NI: Trans Day of Remembrance Superhero Mural Launch

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November 20th that honours the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

In Northern Ireland, for the last six weeks, Eden Place Arts Centre and The Rainbow Project have been working on a mural to highlight the trans community who survive, in spite of the everyday prejudices that they encounter. The mural depicts the ‘superheroes’ in all their diverse forms, and it also includes a wheelchair, to acknowledge trans people with disabilities within the community, who may experience additional stigma and discrimination.

Mardi Kennedy from The Rainbow Project stated:

“We are delighted to be working with Eden Place Arts Centre on this project. The project is inclusive to all LBGT people from the Western Health Trust. We have an excellent diversity of trans people and allies who have joined together in solidarity to learn more about TDOR, commemorate those who have lost their lives due to transphobic violence and to increase visibility of issues experienced by the trans community.”

Talking about the project, one of the participants, Jennifer, commented:

“For me it’s about the visibility, and it’s quite an honour to be on Free Derry Wall, through this project I’ve learned that the trans community have got allies, and the craic has been really good!”

The Transgender Superhero’s Mural will be launched on Monday 20th November, at Free Derry Wall at 1pm, all are welcome to attend!
