Netflix: Women’s Roles To Inspire This International Women’s Day

Laverne Cox was the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in her role as Sophia Burnett in Orange is The New Black, and hers isn’t the only women’s story that can be found on Netflix:

Denise (Lena Waithe) Master of NoneLena plays Aziz Anzari’s friend, Denise, in Master of None, and made history as the first African American woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing for the show’s ‘Thanksgiving’ episode.

Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Ann Moss) – Marvel’s Jessica Jonesjust one of the show’s many badass women, lawyer, Jeri Hogarth, works with Jessica Jones throughout Season 1.

Nomi Marks (Jamie Clayton – Sense8) – Nomi is a political blogger and hacktivist, based in San Francisco. Nomi is a proud transgender woman and lesbian, happily living with her fiancée Amanita.

Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) – Orange is The New Black – across the first four seasons of Orange is The New Black, we learn about Poussey’s past relationships and road to acceptance with her father.

 Marsha P. JohnsonThe Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnsonthis powerful documentary chronicles the life and death of trans activist, Marsha P. Johnson, who was instrumental in jumpstarting the Stonewall Riots.

Chase & Jo (Kiersey Clemons and Jacqueline Toboni) – Easy  – in the episode ‘Vegan Cinderella, we see one of the series’ most visceral and honest depictions of a love story between these two characters.
