Gay Games Hong Kong surpasses crowdfunding milestone

More than USD100,000 has been donated to support the first Gay Games to be held in Asia!

With just over two years to go until the Gay Games are hosted in Hong Kong and in Asia for the first time, support for the Games continues to gather pace. The significant crowdfunding milestone of USD100,000 has been surpassed, thanks to a steady stream of generous donations from the general public.

The donations form an important portion of the funds needed to bring the Gay Games to life, supporting the tremendous amount of organisation and preparation required to put on an event of this scale. The Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2022 (GGHK) expects to welcome over 12,000 participants, 75,000 spectators with the help of 3,000 volunteers from over 100 countries.

GGHK is a nine-day event, to be held from 11-19 November, 2022, in Hong Kong. The Gay Games in Hong Kong will consist of 36 sports, arts and culture events, a festival village, and opening and closing ceremonies, all organised by the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone is welcome to participate regardless of sexual orientation, age, gender identity, ethnicity or ability, and all events are open entry.

Crowdfunding donations so far have come from many different sectors of society, including individual donors, private organisations, and sporting associations.

Christof Witting, Director of Fundraising and Partnerships, remarked:

“We are thrilled to have exceeded the USD100,000 crowdfunding milestone already, despite the tough economic downturn and other challenges we are all facing this year. It demonstrates that in times like these the Games are even more important for us as a community to Unite in Diversity, and donating even just a few dollars to become a proud sponsor is a really valuable way to become a part of this movement”.
