NOCTURNAL EMISSIONS: AN AMBIENT ELECTRONIC HOMMAGE TO COLD WAR SHORT WAVE SPY BROADCASTS AND THE MURKY WORLD OF RADIO NOISE
It’s 1982. A house in the country. The small hours. A 10 year-old boy is illicitly listening to a transistor radio under a mess of bed covers. Inside the blankets, cavernous dark but for the light of the dial, which the boy wheels. He hears rumours of the lesser disclosed world; cosmic background noise, primal radiation; he hears static bursts, glitches, bleeps; he hears the sounds of space; he hears the other; alien voices.
Neurosiscologne is the new solo project from Zeropunkt/ ¡NO! bassist Damien Lennon. The mini album, entitled Nocturnal_eMissions, was born of the artist’s ongoing fascination with radio noise, which catalysed into a sound project upon discovery of The Conet Project.
Released in 1997, The Conet Project compiles Numbers Station broadcasts, coded transmissions to spies in the field, through formatted number sequences, accessible (if not intelligible) to anyone with a short wave receiver.
In homage to the spirit of transmission/reception, Nocturnal_eMissions is an invocation to the fusion of inner and outer furtive worlds. The music consists of mangled electronica, beatless growling oceans of sound, and floating spatial probes. Delivered through immersive turns of pitch and modulation wheels, composition is achieved using customised and re-purposed midi instruments, studiously distressed via an archaic midi keyboard.
