LGBT Adoptive Parents Do Just As Well As Heterosexual Parents

A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology, Vol.27 (3) has found that children adopted by LGBT parents, do just as well in terms of psychological adjustment, as those adopted by heterosexual couples. The authors say an estimated 16,000 same-sex couples are raising more than 22,000 adopted children in the U.S. at present.

The Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland has dismissed health minister Edwin Poots’ appeal against the high court determination that the current ban on same sex couples adopting in Northern Ireland represents unlawful discrimination. The minister has now been ordered to allow same sex couples to begin the adoption process.

Today, Portugal has passed a law that will allow same-sex married couples to adopt their partner’s child, whether that child is adopted or biological, but they have stopped short of allowing a same-sex couple to adopt as a married couple like a heterosexual couple.
